If you live in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or on another continent, traveling abroad can pose problems when taken along the electrical due to voltage differences in various countries around the world.
By taking a long vacation, there are some electrical items that you can not live without he. Needed items may include battery chargers (for cell phones, digital cameras and other portable items), hair dryer, electric shaver, radio, tubes, iron, VCR, DVD player. Without a proper voltage match, could permanently damage your electrical product when connected to a power source.
Understanding the differences of voltage before You Go
It's a good idea to research the differences in voltage before traveling. Some countries have an across the board standard 110 volts, while others have a voltage level of 220. For example, countries North America and parts of South and Central America, the Pacific and the Caribbean operate on 110 volts. Other countries around the world operate on 220 volts, while some countries have both 110 and 220 volts.
If you're traveling from the U.S. (with a standard 110 volts) to Europe, and the area to be visited uses only 220 volts, you need a voltage converter from 110V to 220V, also called a step forward voltage converter. On the other hand, if you travel from one country in Europe that has a standard 220 volts to the United States, you will need a voltage converter from 220V to 110V, or a step back voltage converter.
What is a voltage converter or voltage transformer?
A voltage converter is a device used to convert the voltage from a power source to create a useful – and safe – power supply. Another word often used is a voltage converter voltage transformer, although in reality there are differences between the two. Voltage transformer is usually larger in size and is designed for more continuous use. A voltage converter usually double or halve stress, but some converters can do both.
Voltage converters usually come with adapters that allow end connection conversion of form and the final size of the spark plug. The adapter plug can be used without the converter if required any voltage conversion. It's a good idea to carry with you a variety of end plug adapters, because some countries have many different types of outlets. For example, some areas do not use the output flat bits used in the UK states.

Some countries not only have differences in voltage, but also the frequency (cycles per second) differences. Many electrical appliances are not affected by this difference, however, some are like watches, espresso, and other relevant products. A clock, for example, can not keep time properly if there is a frequency difference. When buying a voltage converter or transformer, first find out what kind of conversion that will that – step up or down. Most online electronics stores offer many different types of converters 110,220 volt transformers and plug adapters you can easily find affordable solutions when traveling.
